My friend told me that she needs a certificate of ownership and the solicitor told her it would cost $8000 USD. Is this right?

11th Jun 2018

My friend is visiting UK and is trying to claim an inheritance, and she says the solicitor told her that she needs a certificate of ownership, since it is under her fathers name, and that it would cost $8000 USD to process the certificate of ownership. Is this correct or is she lying to me.

Do you mean you want to know whether your friend is lying? or the solicitor?

In order to claim her inheritance, your friend needs to apply for grant of probate to the relevant probate courts in the UK.

Granting of probate is the first step in the legal process of administering the estate of a deceased person, resolving all claims and distributing the deceased person's property under a will. Costs may vary.

I deal with inheritance claims and I am not familiar with the term "Certificate of Ownership" nor would I imagine that to make a claim would cost so much money.
