Further to your question, employers are able to change their employees' terms and conditions, subject to their obligation to properly consult with the employee. If, after consultation, the employer and the employee are not in agreement in relation to the changes proposed by the employer, then ultimately the employer can enforce those changes. What employers often do is dismiss the employee and then immediately offer them the job on the new terms and conditions. If, however, you are unhappy about the way your employer has treated you, in particular about the fact that they have employed somebody else to do your job, you may wish to raise a formal grievance setting out why you are unhappy and asking them to address your concerns.

For you to be placed on furlough, both you and your employer must agree, and your employer must confirm this in writing. 

An employee’s rights, including redundancy rights, are not affected by being on furlough. However, an employer can still make an employee redundant whilst they are on furlough or afterwards.

As your employer has asked you to go on furlough and if you refuse to agree then you may be at risk of redundancy or termination of employment, depending on your employer’s circumstances. However, your employer must still follow the usual redundancy rules.
