My job has been given away whilst I'm on maternity leave

Posted on 26 Jul 2017

I have been employed with this company  two years and I have gone on maternity and due to return shortly. I went into my work to discus when I would return. After speaking with my manager we agreeed that me returning on a part time basis would not be ok as we are a target based company. He carried on to say how good the sales team was, he also mentioned that the head count had gone down to 4 instead of 5 while I was on maternity leave. I then made a comment saying that someone is on a temporary contract so it's a shame we couldn't employ them full time.

The general manager said, someone was on a temporary contract but they left so no one is now. I said that someone had to be on a temporary contract so I can return. He carried on to say that the person who was left and said but it doesn't matter because we can just sack someone for you to return.

Also a promotion happened when I was off on maternity and before I left I asked if I could go forward for any promotions to happen and the manager agreeed that I could however he didn't inform me of this promotion employed someone else. I asked for the reason behind this and was told that he couldn't tell me because I was on maternity and because I had a baby.

I have a grievance meeting with just my regional manager and myself to discus the following points

  • less favourable treatment
  • discrimination

However I don't see a very good outcome and I believe that they will try and sack me in some way or they will just brush it under the carpet.

What are my options?
