In order to legally end a marriage, there must be reasonable grounds for divorce. This encourages couples to work through problems and attempt to resolve relationship complications prior to ending the marriage. There are 5 accepted grounds for a divorce, which are as follows:

 * Adultery - If one of the married couple has sex with another person and this has resulted in the couple no longer being able to be together, adultery is an acceptable reason for divorce. The divorce proceedings must be started within 6 months of the adultery, as this will not be an acceptable ground for divorce if the incident was over 6 months previous to the application.
 * Unreasonable Behaviour - If a husband or wife has behaved so badly that it has meant the marriage is no longer possible, ‘unreasonable behaviour' may be cited as the grounds for divorce. This could include behaviour such as violence, abuse, substance abuse, and lack of financial commitment or support.
 * Desertion - If a husband or wife has deserted their partner without their agreement and with no good reason or by way of ending the relationship, this is an acceptable ground for divorce, so long as the desertion has been for longer than 2 years in the last 2.5 years.
 * Living Apart for More than 2 Years - If a married couple has lived apart for more than 2 years and both agree to the divorce, they have a reasonable ground for divorce.
 * Living Apart for More than 5 Years - If a couple does not agree on the need for a divorce but have lived apart for more than 5 years, they have acceptable grounds for divorce.

It is a bit difficult to advise without having sight of any agreements or court order with respect to contact arrangements. Presumably an order must have been made for the child to relocate to England. You should also have had notice of the hearing to attend court. Contact arrangements must not be blurred with child maintenance, and if your ex-wife is "blackmailing" you, you may have to take matters back to court to vary the order.
