Claim for a Dog Bite Attack
If you have suffered injury and/or loss as a result of being bitten or attacked by a dog, then you may be entitled to claim compensation for your injuries. You can claim for your physical injuries (including scarring) and any psychological injuries, as well as financial losses incurred because of the dog bite or attack.
Not all dog bites will automatically lead to a claim. It is a specialist area of law and it is my advice to seek expert legal advice from the outset.
There are, however, things that you should do following a dog attack and to assist with any civil claim.
- Report it to the Police, obtain a crime reference number.
- Seek medical attention, ensure you are up to date with your tetanus jabs. While rabies is a very low risk and rare in the UK, it is a risk that should be avoided.
- Obtain the dog owners details, including their contact address and telephone number. If possible also find out if the dog is insured, and if so, details of the insurance company. If the dog is not specifically insured, some home insurance policies will insure for public liability incidents.
- If there are any witnesses to the accident, obtain their details.
- Photograph the dog and owner if possible.
- Photograph your injuries and any scarring (it is useful to take regular photographs of your scarring and its recovery).
- Report the matter to the dog warden. They may be able to advise if the dog has previously attacked anyone.
- If the incident occurred at work, ensure that you report it as you would any other accident at work, and complete an accident report form.
- Keep a record of all the losses and expenses you incur
- Seek expert legal advice on your rights
Most solicitors would be happy to deal with your claim on a no win no fee basis. It is, however, important to instruct a solicitor with the knowledge, expertise and experience to not only bring a successful claim, but to ensure that you receive the maximum level of compensation.
