Can I have something removed from my DBS

I have a conviction on my DBS, for an offence when I was 17... Although I turned 18 when it went to court. This was in 1982 & was a minor theft offence. I was given a fine to pay & have had no criminal offences since.  Is it possible to have this removed from my DBS, as it is stopping me from applying for a new job? If so, what do I need to do? Thank you.
