Whether the police need to be called to the scene of a car accident will largely depend on the circumstances of your accident. In the majority of minor car accidents, it won't be necessary to call the police. However, there are circumstances where you will need to call the police. Here are the most common reasons:

 * If the driver of the other vehicle leaves the scene of the accident without stopping to give you their insurance details. In this situation you would need to call the police immediately.
 * If anybody has suffered injuries in the accident, you should call the police. If required you should also request an ambulance.
 * If the car accident you are involved in blocks a road, and you are unable to safely move your vehicle to the side of the road, you should call the police immediately. You should also contact the police if the car accident is in a position that could put yourself and other road users in danger, such as being on a blind bend or a hill.
 * If the driver of the other vehicle appears to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs, you should call 999 to ensure the police are able to do roadside substance tests at the scene of the car accident. If the driver is under the influence of drink or drugs, calling the police straight away can help to ensure they don't put any more road users in danger by continuing to drive.
 * If the driver or a passenger of the other vehicle is behaving aggressively or abusive towards you, you should remain calm and call the police. Although emotions can run high following an accident, if you feel in any way threatened by anyone it is important to seek assistance from the police.
