Will a friend of mine continue to inherit the house she rents where landlord dies without signing a will?

landlord has no family so promised my friend that he would give her the house she rents off him when he dies. He has been to a solicitor and they have drafted a will but unfortunately the landlord was taken into hospital urgently where he contacted the solicitors and asked them to attend with the will so it could be signed but he passed away before they got to the hospital. My friend is the landlords nominated next of kin so where does she stand legally now. She is scared to death of being made homeless. Thankyou for your time
